Chloramphenicol
Indications/Uses
Acute infections caused by Salmonella typhi. Serious infections caused by susceptible strains of Salmonella spp. Rickettsia, meningitis caused by H. influenzae. Bacteremia caused by gm -ve bacteria.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV inj or infusion Reconstitution: Add aq diluent (eg, water for inj or 5% dextrose inj) to make 10% soln inj over at least 1 min. Adult Typhoid fever & rickettsial infections 50 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 6 hr. Meningitis 100 mg/kg daily. Childn 50-75 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 6 hr. Meningitis 50-100 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 6 hr.
Contraindications
Previous hypersensitivity &/or toxicity. Porphyria. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Perform serum conc determination at appropriate intervals in patients w/ impaired liver/kidney function, & infants w/ immature metabolic processes.
